Stephanopoulos graduated from Columbia University in 1982 with a degree in political science, where he was the salutatorian of his class and elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. He also worked as a sports broadcaster for WKCR-FM, Columbia’s radio station. After Columbia, he attended Balliol College at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a master’s degree in theology in 1984.

After completing his education at Oxford, Stephanopoulos began working as a political consultant for Democratic candidates. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed him as the White House Communications Director, a position he held until 1996.
