The woman, Audree Kopp, had been wearing the hair tie for several days and had not washed it. The hair tie had a glittery surface, which may have caused microabrasions on Kopp’s wrist, allowing bacteria to enter her skin. The infection eventually spread to Kopp’s bloodstream and required surgery to remove a large abscess.

Garbaciak shared Kopp’s story to warn viewers about the dangers of wearing hair ties around the wrist. She also said that she and her co-workers had all stopped wearing hair ties around their wrists after hearing Kopp’s story.

Sadly, it got so bad, that she needed to go to the ER. Her doctor told her bacteria from the glittery hair tie got under her skin — through her pores and hair follicles. It caused three different infections that could have been deadly, and she needed surgery. Doctors say to make sure the bands are not too tight around your wrist. Wash the ties, and don’t leave them on your wrist for long periods.

There is no story, however, about Joyce’s hair but her co-workers and their family members with long hair used to do what that woman used to do quite a bit.

Diana Gutiérrez is the new co-anchor of “WISN 12 News at 10:00 p.m.” starting from November 20, 2023. She will work alongside co-anchor Patrick Paolantonio, “Milwaukee’s Chief Meteorologist” Mark Baden, and Sports Director Dario Melendez.
