According to NPR, Gershkovich is being held until the end of May while investigations are ongoing. A court, operating in closed session, ordered his detention.
As per Kommersant, he was scheduled to be transferred to Lefortovo prison while awaiting trial. If convicted, he could face a 20-year sentence. The Wall Street Journal’s lawyers have been unable to locate him.
The charges were “vehemently denied” by The Wall Street Journal, and criticized by the White House, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the National Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, and other media advocacy groups.
The Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center’s Tatiana Stanovaya stated that Gershkovich’s coverage of the war in Ukraine is likely what attracted the authorities’ attention.
